Exit Through The Gift Shop - Banksy

Saturday, February 26, 2011

With Oscar night rapidly approaching, I wanted to see Exit Through The Gift Shop beforehand. I've been wanting to see it since it was first released in theaters but I wasn't able to since I became really busy. I took some time this weekend to see it through Netflix, and I absolutely loved it.

I visited the Mr. Brainwash exhibit in New York last April, which I also posted about. I had no idea the man behind it was Thierry Guetta, who seems a bit peculiar & a bit of a joke. He stumbled upon art through filming. Not your typical filmmaker, he just filmed everything & anything in his life and started to film street artists, starting with his cousin. Through his escapades, he met London based artist, Banksy, who I think is the true talent in graffiti and art. (He even makes a better director with this witty Oscar-nominated documentary).

Thierry Guetta attempts making a film about street art which ends up horribly done, and therefore taken over by Banksy himself.

The film leaves you wondering really what is art? This man, Mr. Brainwash (MBW), got his fame through his more talented artist friends who reluctantly helped him promote his first art show - which led to press and a big following. He started as a strange man with an obsession to film everything, and became "an artist". Some may just call him a hoax. He hired others to build sculptures & installations and he did other art with techniques he's learned from the artists he followed. It's unknown what is his signature style. (Although, I am somewhat curious what is at his art show currently going on NY - which I may stop by sometime this week.)

Anyway, the film proves the point that anyone can create art, but not everyone should.

I definitely recommend this charming movie. It gives you insight to behind the scenes of the street art world, and the making of Mr. Brainwash.

Hope everyone has a great weekend! Who else will be watching the Oscar's? :)

Ooooh I saw this documentary a few days ago as well. I loved it! I really hope it wins the Oscar b/c I'm super curious to see who (or what, lol) is going to show up to recieve it!

That's awesome you got to see Mr. Brainwash's exhibit! I would love to see Banksy's some day, if he has another...

PS. Speculation online is that Banksy and Mr. B are the same person, and the whole doc is a hoax. What do you think? ;)

Loved this movie! It was funnier than I expected. I loved Banksy's quote "anyone can create art, but not everyone should."

If you look closely at our new urban art collection you'll see elements of design made popular by street art.
