Sunday Flowers: Snowberries

Sunday, November 28, 2010

The Snowberry is an interesting shrub. It's named after the little white fruit it bears. (It is said that the berries are poisonous though - but white crowned pigeons snack on these). It blooms small flowers from July, white or pink berries from October to February.

The plant is native to Florida's coastal shell ridge. The thick, leathery leaves allow the plant to retain water, thus making it a drought resistant species. Upon opening the white, olive-shaped fruit, the fleshy pulp is exposed and sparkles in the sunlight like fresh crystals of snow.

Wow, snowberries are so pretty! Perfect flowers for wintertime; they would look so pretty in a bouquet of pointsettias.

Pretty! I don't think I've ever seen these before...flora is kind of limited up here, seeing as how it's winter for nearly half the year!
