NewYorkCity Ballet

Sunday, October 10, 2010

Last night, I went to see a ballet with my boyfriend Andres & my friend Tanuka at the David Koch Theater in Lincoln Center. It was the second to last day for the ballet to be in New York City. There were four pieces within the show we saw: Charconne; Concerto Barocco; Tarantella; and Glass Pieces.

It was absolutely stunning. Everyone, including the men, were so graceful and they all seemed so light & airy. Chaconne is a dance built on a phrase in the bass & was often used by composers of the 17th & 18th centuries to end an opera in a festive mood. Concerto Barocco demonstrated poetry, athleticism, and musicality. This work had its beginnings as a School of American Ballet exercise and was first performed for the Latin-American tour of the American Ballet Caravan in 1941. Tarantella (my favorite piece), the dancers wore Italian costumes & held and played tambourines as they danced witty and jolly. It was more of a fun piece and the music was much more upbeat. Glass Pieces is best described as dance to music with repetitive structures. The choreography was beautiful and the way the dancers moved in PERFECT synchronized motion was astounding. The way they could easily stop and freeze instantly was amazing.

Below are shots from the four pieces taken by Paul Kolnik from the NYCBallet website.

I definitely recommend seeing a ballet in New York City the next time it's in town. Being a New Yorker, it was my first time at a ballet and it was a brilliant experience!

Can you believe I have never seen a performance? So sad, I know :) Nobody ever wants to go with me, which I find surprising. Maybe one day I will just go by myself. Sounds like an amazing experience!
