It Gets Better / Love Is Louder

Sunday, October 24, 2010

I don't usually post much about news or politics, but I've been wanting to post this for awhile.

It's heartbreaking learning about a suicide over gay bashing every day. I've lost count after 7 individual stories, and it's still sadly ongoing. You would think people would learn their lesson after the Tyler Clementi incident. The bullying has to stop. I have a lot of gay friends and it offends and angers me if someone tries to go after them. Here are two amazing current projects (I'm sure there are more as well) to help prevent all of this.

One is Love is Louder.
Love is Louder was started by actress Brittany Snow, The Jed Foundation and MTV to build on the outpouring of support online after the lives of multiple teenagers were lost to suicide in September 2010. "This movement strives to amplify the momentum of other inspiring online campaigns and invite anyone who has felt mistreated, misunderstood or isolated into the conversation. We are here to raise the volume around a critical message -- that love and support is more powerful than the external and internal voices that bring us down, cause us pain and make us feel hopeless."

The other is It Gets Better. You might have seen some videos on Perez Hilton's blog. Celebrities, politicians, and even President Barack Obama has made a video to show people that life does get better.

I'm pretty sure EVERYONE (straight or gay) was bullied at one point to an extent in life. Those who bullied you either didn't understand you or were insecure. I just want to put in my two cents into this movement, so to those who are going through this situation: Don't let them bring you down!

I've never understood why so many people hate gays. It's not like they chose to be gay, it's not like they're threatening society. I'm in favour of gay marriage, and I wish it were allowed in France (where I live).

I was bullied as a kid, as I'm sure everyone has been, and I just can't understand why this is happening.

I am so proud to see so many people stand up against this and hopefully together we can make a change.

I think that many have been bullied at some point in time; it's important for all of us to combat it together! :)

thanks for writing about this. I had heard about It Gets Better but not Love is Louder, so it's cool to hear that so many people are coming together for this great cause.

Very cool that you shared this. Who cares what someone is (gay, straight, black, white, whatever). I judge people by their insides, I am proud to say. Thanks for sharing, Audrey!

I can't believe how much gay suicide is happening around the country. I'm really glad people are making an effort to stop the bullying that leads to people taking their own life.

I'm glad you posted this. What is happening is sad and senseless and hopefully if enough people start to speak out it'll get better.

Bullying is both pathetic and futile. You're right, most of us have been unfortunate enough to experience it and thankfully come away from it stronger. x

Bullying is not OK no matter where it takes place. I do hope the situation over gay suicides just gets better not worse.

Nice post. I hope the real message of love gets in to heads and hearts soon.

Thanks for posting this. Bullying of any kind needs to stop. It seems like it's only getting worse as time goes on...which is totally wrong.

NO WAY. I was totally watching all these "it Gets Better" videos. I think they're beautiful. I'm not gay, but I think the message - like you said - transcends to ALL people.

MAKE LOVE NOT HATE.

P.S. another cool video is "FCKH8" - youtube it up!

Great post! And you are right-everyone has probably been bullied at some point or another. Thanks for sharing this with all of us. I hope we can bring more attention to this issue and resolve it sooner rather than later.

I can't even express how being bullied made me feel when I was younger. I hope that everyone can learn something from those tragic situations.

I was never bullied as a child, but it's sad that someone died because of their sexuality. It reminds me of the days when blacks were burnt in the fire in America just for being Black. Ah, what is the world coming to these days? Tragic!

I was bullied in highschool and it was a verbal abuse from my classmates and it doesn't help that I was the foreign student so I always feel like an outsider until now. It really makes me sad that people has to go through this and I think bullying needs to be seriously addressed in schools and parents and teachers should encourage kids to speak up or report whenver there is bullying going on.

I applaud you for speaking up, Audrey!! This is an issue that needs as much attention as possible! The state of our youth due to all the hateful bullying has to change before more lives are lost :o/

I got bullied myself growing up. It took me years to get over it. So I feel a connection for people who are being bullied for any reason. People defintiely shouldn't be bullied for being gay.

Inspiring post, darling! No one (straight or gay) deserves to be bullied. And it's nice to hear your thoughts about this issue too.

How wonderful to have a president that speaks with such wisdom. It does get better. I was bullied and survived. It was awful when young. Now as an adult I still carry it in my mind, but am a survivor.

thanks for the reminder. i don't get why people are such haters towards gay people. I mean, what did gay people ever do to them? nothing! they're not criminals. just mind your own god damn business and leave others along.

what a wonderful post.
it breaks my heart to think people are still being discriminated against because of their sexual preference to the point where they believe the only way out is suicide.
i have a gay brother and he was so worried about 'coming out' and when he did we were all 'hey, we guessed a long time ago!'.
it must terrible if you feel you have no family or friends as support or even to confide in.

this is sooo scary... i've seen a lot of darkness lately on other people's blogs and the news that I cannot help but wonder what is wrong with our society... we need to find a way out of it because it's killing our people

I agree with everything! My sophomore year of college I did a documentary of the LGBT club on campus, hearing their stories and what they went through had such a deep affect on me! I remain friends with some of them still, and am such an activist! I'm glad to hear of people being one too!

Absolutely!! Great post!! I feel so bad for the Rutgers student who killed himself after being filmed. How cruel & sad that this happened to that poor kid. People are so mean. I've noticed cyber bullying the other week on blogs too. Bullying is horrible. It needs to stop. Great that you got this post out there!
