50 States Dresses

Saturday, October 23, 2010

Robin Barcus Slonina of States of Dress is an installation and performance artist. One of her projects, mentioned recently on Yahoo's Fashion+Beauty section and on her blog, is that she is creating dresses out of unconventional material that is inspired by each of the 50 states. Currently the project is still in progress but she already created about 8. I think they're pretty interesting, although the pine cone one looks like it hurts, haha.

All images are taken from the Yahoo article.
The above image is made out of casino chips and is inspired by Nevada. Below, respectively are named: Maine's pine cone dress, New York's garbage dress, and Wyoming's willow dress.

I thought that maybe she could've done something better for New York's dress though. Garbage? Really?
For more of the dresses, check out her blog or the Yahoo article.

Special thanks to my friend Sarah who showed me the article about this :)

A great idea for a project! I love the last one, though disturbingly she almost looks dead in that.

definitely NY could've been something better like great food or something representing a melting pot of cultures... very interesting project though!

Those are really cool (I agree with you about New York, though!!!). I'm not really sure I want to see my state, Iowa's, dress; she probably played up the farm aspect.
