Sunday Flowers: Mother's Day Special

Sunday, May 09, 2010

Happy Mother's Day! What are you all doing today to celebrate? I'm taking my mom out for brunch at one of my favorite restaurants & to the movies to see Babies! (so cute, you have to at least check out the trailer)

For this weekly post of Sunday Flowers, it's all about carnations since these are my mom's favorite flowers. It's scientific name is Dianthus - deriving from Greek words of "dios" (the God Zeus) and "anthos" (flower) - meaning the flowers of God.
Carnations come in all types of colors and here are some of their specific meanings:

carnations in general : fascination, woman's love
pink: mother's love
light red: admiration
dark red: deep love & woman's affection
white: pure love and good luck
striped: regret & refusal
green: st. patrick's day
purple: capriciousness
yellow: disappointment, dejection
I'll return all your comments later today when I get home :) Hope everyone enjoys their day!

Pretty flowers. I made some for my mom out of tissue paper and a card. Then me, my dad and my mom went out to the mall for some fancy cookies and coffee.

Lovely flowers. I love how flowers have this unique language. I found a very old book in a UK Village - The Language Of Flowers. Such an enchanting, beaautiful book on what different flowers mean.

So interesting that it's the "flower of the Gods" and so many people consider it a filler flower...I think they're fun and so feminine, I love the frilly layers!

Anastasia said...

That's cool to know. You think the carnation is so unassuming, but its "the flower of the gods"!
