Sunday Flowers: African Tulip

Sunday, May 30, 2010

These beautiful flowers from Africa are also known as "the flame of the forest". The tulips are open and branched, evergreen tress of African forests. They are bell-shaped orange/red flowers with a yellow border and 4 brown anthered stamens in the center. With the flowers, comes with 5-10 green/brown fingerlike pods pointing upwards.

They grow up to 7-25 meters tall and sometimes they're even called "the fountain tree" because water is sealed in the flower buds. If you slice it open, it would squirt out like a fountain. Also, hummingbirds love African Tulips!

This is one of the reasons why I want to visit Africa... I love tulips and their version is special. It doesn't look like those Holland tulips we're all familiar with. xoxo
